James Savage (–) was an American banker and author. He was one of the founding fathers of Provident Institution for Savings in the Town of Boston established in as the first chartered savings bank in the United States. James was also well known for his research as an antiquary and as author of "A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England.". The Indian Princess; or, La Belle Sauvage, is a musical play with a libretto by James Nelson Barker and music by John Bray, based on the Pocahontas story as originally recorded in John Smith's The Generall Historie of Virginia (). The piece is structured in the style of a Ballad-opera, with songs and choruses, and also has music underlying dialogue, like a premiered: The Chestnut Street Theatre . The Merciless Savage underlies the Black “thug” and Muslim “terrorist” stereotypes. Priests and traders preferred the Noble Savage stereotype: it expanded their customer base. Settler colonialists preferred the Merciless Savage stereotype: it expanded their land base, by giving them moral cover to wipe out the people whose land they wanted.
